Okay, so I know it's not very Haloween-y, but the roses are so gorgeous right now that I had to use them, and the Fall leaves haven't really started to change, so I didn't have anything even remotely seasonal to post. We've had a couple of good rains, not enough to end the drought by any stretch of the imagination, but my yard is loving it.

Time changes this weekend and I am so glad. It's really dark in the morning when we're crawling out of bed before six, but I find that I get more writing done if I get an early start.

Interesting...just had an earthquake while writing this--a little short, sharp jolt. Just a reminder when you're a Californian, the ground really does tend to shift beneath your feet! (Just checked the USGS site, and it was a 3.6 very close to our old house up in Cobb--we REALLY felt them there!)

But, back to writing--I've passed the half-way mark on Redemption, the second book in my Romantic Suspense series for St. Martin's Press, and hope to have it finished and to my editor before Thanksgiving. It's coming along well--Ben, my hero, starts out as such scum, but he's a good guy at heart who's made some really stupid decisions. He's reached a point in his life where he knows it's time to man up, and so far I'm really starting to like him. A lot.

I've got copy edits here to go through for Tangled. That's the novella coming out next May in the Hot Alphas Anthology with Lora Leigh, Laurelin McGee, and Shiloh Walker. Seems like such a long way off, but time's moving so fast that it's making my head spin!

Before I forget, I've been reading some really good books this past month--just finished Elizabeth Hoyt's newest in her Maiden Lane Series, Darling Beast. It's absolutely wonderful. And a totally different book by a new to me author, Cover Him With Darkness by Janine Ashbless, is finally out, and I highly recommend it. It's much darker than what I usually read, but I was asked to read this one for a cover quote by the editor at Cleis Press. I told her I have a rule that unless it's a book I'd give five stars to on an Amazon review, I won't give a quote. My reasoning is that I want what I say about a book to mean something to the readers who know me and might take a chance on a book I've said is good, and I stick to this rule. If I could have given this book six stars, I would have. Could NOT put it down. It's not going to be for everyone, but it's absolutely mesmerizing. Take a look at the blurb on Amazon and see if it appeals to your adventurous side!

I'm totally hooked on anything Jessica Scott writes, and am currently reading her newest Coming Home novella, All I Want for Christmas is You. Have only just started the story, and it's almost kept me from doing the newsletter. I really didn't want to put it down. I had never read military romances before discovering Jessica Scott's Coming Home series, but I am absolutely hooked on everything this author writes. This one is already tugging at my heart. Capt. Scott has served in the Middle East and she knows what our soldiers--both men and women--are going through, and how hard it is to make that transition home to family and loved ones. Her stories are wonderful romances, but they're also giving me a totally new appreciation for the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make for us every day. Definitely one I recommend.

Have also read Robyn Carr's latest in her Thunder Point series, and it's another winner. Read The Homecoming. Robyn's stories are always keepers, the kinds of books you want to read over and over again.

Almost forgot! Dakota Cassidy's Talking After Midnight. Dakota and I have been friends for ages, and the woman is real-life hysterical--but so is her writing. You talk about heart? Her stories are about funny people with dialog to die for, but they're also characters that you would love to just settle back with a good bottle of wine and drink and swap stories with. This entire series is just a pure joy to read. And one of Dakota's (and also my) best buds, Renee George, has a series of M/M romance shorts out called "CockTails." They're wonderful. Short, sexy and entertaining, and again, they're such perfectly sweet romances that I absolutely love them. I'm hoping the link works--it will take you to a whole list of her stories.

I know I'm forgetting some--my apologies, but writing has kept me really busy this month. I lost some time after having some minor surgery early in October, though I can actually say that between me and the Mac, I am finally winning. (Which is my way of saying I haven't chucked the blasted computer through the window yet!) I'm able to write again--it was a very frustrating month or so of adjustment, and a reminder that I really DON'T do change well.

I need to get ahead of schedule on my writing so I can read Nalini Singh's newest, Archangel's Shadows, and Yasmine Galenorn's Priestess Dreaming, both of which are sitting here beside my chair, taunting me.

I also want to give some books away. Cleaning out some of my stash, again, and I've got two copies each of Dream Unchained, Sexy Beast VIII, and Wolf Tales VIII, so when you enter, please tell me which ones you're interested in winning (and you can list all three if you don't have them, and if your name is picked, you'll get one of them)

So, your instructions are to fill in the entry form and tell me which print book you would like a chance to win--list any of the three that you don't have or all three, though the winner will only get one book. And this month I will also choose at least one winner out of the US. Don't forget to give me your snail mail address. This contest is for print books, not ebooks, and I really don't have time to chase you down for your address. PLEASE double check your email address--I had three people I couldn't track down last month without a lot of time-consuming work. If your email bounces because you wrote it down wrong, I'm not going to hunt for you. I'll just choose another winner.

I hope you have a wonderful Halloween and that you're staying safe and healthy, and please don't forget to find time to read a good book. They're so good for the soul! (and if they're romances, they're good for the heart, too...)

Take care and be well,
Kate

I entered the contest and forgot to tell you which books I wanted, just to let you know I would like all three of them. Dreams Unchained and Sexy Beast VIII and Wolf Tales VIII. Thank You

I would love Wolf Tales Viii, my copy years ago had never been returned from someone I loaned it too LOL

Ya know, Lisa, I quit loaning my books for just that reason. I got so tired of people not returning them, and acting all offended when I asked for my books back. The thing is, my books are really special to me, but I don't think everyone feels that way! Unfortunately...

Kate, I will now only lend books that I can bear to lose. I know this is terrible , but I can recall each and every time that a book has not been returned to me and I have had to replace it. It is one of my biggest peeves. lol

I learned a long time ago NEVER loan out books UNLESS you have a backup copy. Books are mostly never returned. It is not that the person you loaned it to is trying to harm you, but mostly they have forgotten it. Remember that humans have very busy lives more so now than ever before! Just give the person you loaned it to a GENTAL reminder that they still have your book and that you'd like it back ASAP. Most times you'll get it back but sometimes you will not.... 😒

I still have not gotten my books and stuff out of the storage units in Moses Lake. I'm putting a ad in the Spokesman Review for help. There is a Salvation Army drop off not far from here I can sort thru the books I don't want. No Worries I'm keeping all of yours, Joeys and others. :)

Would like to thank you for the stories written over the years. I have enjoyed reading, especially the ones of the Chanku and how they interact with each other. Have to play catch up with the younger generation, but will do so. Enjoy beating the Mac, even if you have to call it a draw!! YOU WIN!!!

I hate to admit it, but it's starting to grow on me. I'm still not real happy with Open Office, but really don't want to use Microsoft office for Mac, and this at least lets me open old docs, but it keeps crashing on me. I have to learn to save after I write anything at all or I lose it.

Hey Kate, How have you been doing? Good I hope! It has been awhile since I last talked to you. Well I have not been entering your contest because I have all of your books. I have to say that you are not just one of my favorite authors, you are my favorite. I see where you were talking about reading Nalini Singhs " Archangel's Shadows" I have been for awhile been looking at that series and have not taken the next step of buying that first book in that series. So tell me what do you think of that series? I have so many times seen book series that really look good and buy them and find out that the writing is not as good as you would think. So when you said that you are wanting to read "Archangel's Shadows" I thought I would ask you about that series.
Happy reading and writing*
Teresa

Hi Teresa! Nalini's books are wonderful. I got hooked on her Psy/Changeling series first and then bought the first in her Guild Hunters series, and I love them just as much, if not more. She's one of the few authors I'll buy in hardcover--JR Ward and Jayne Ann Krentz are the others. This past month I started reading Nalini's contemporary series--the first is Rock Addiction and the second Rock Courtship--absolutely wonderful. I love her "voice," the way she phrases her work, so I can definitely recommend her books.

Hi Kate. No entry for me since I loved those I read and usually read ebooks so now my hubby can't see how much I have lol. I too love reading so much that I love hearing about your books you read. Dakota I s hilarious and hers are ones I pick up when I need laughter. I don't do horror or really dark books now but I used to. I adore historical romance but haven't gotten the Elizabeth Hoyt Maiden Lane books but loved her first trilogy, the Prince ones (Raven Prince, Serpent Prince, etc). I'm reading for the first time, Sarah Maclean. I think you'll love too.

I'm looking forward to your military romance! Love and appreciate all you do. Cathie

The first Elizabeth Hoyt book I read was THE LEOPARD PRINCE. I was hooked! Have that full series and all the Maiden Lane books, plus a few other random titles.

Redemption isn't so much a military romance, though Jessica Scott has really helped me with my military hero, but he's home now and trying to fix some really terrible wrongs from years before. He was a real ass to his brother and has a lot to make up for. His character has been fun to write, especially now that he's met a woman he loves. I'm really having fun with a somewhat reformed bad-boy hero!

I'm a romance author--I really love those happy endings, though I don't mind putting my characters through pure, unadulterated hell before they get there...

Contests are back! I'm not totally settled, but really miss giving things away, so ready or not, I'm going to start slow. International entries are welcome, though I will have to limit International winners to ebooks. Postage costs are just too high. Your addresses will not be shared or sold--I respect your privacy. I will only collect addresses if I am giving away print books. I won't be doing that as much because I've got very few print books left in my stash, but I do have other things!
