February 2015 Newsletter

2/19/2015

Picture
Finally! I've been plotting all day long to get my newsletter done, but this is the first chance I've had to even consider it. I thought that once I got my edits on INTIMATE finished, I'd have all sorts of free time, but then I started trying to catch up on stuff I was behind on, and, well...you all know how that goes!

I really debated whether or not to post the picture I used today--so many of you are freezing your butts off right now, while we're "suffering" with temps ranging from the high sixties into the mid seventies. For all intents and purposes, we have not had a winter in northern California. A couple of good rains, but not nearly enough to end the drought, my roses are leafing out, the ceanothus (the blue flowers in the picture) has been blooming for weeks now, my daffodils are already through and everything is bursting. Of course, we could still get frost and lose it all, but for now it's beautiful but really weird.

I did get the edits done, which I was beginning to think was never going to happen, and I really do think that INTIMATE is a stronger story for all the changes. What took me a long time and sounds really weird, I guess, is that my editor wanted me to change the hero's name. She had a perfectly good reason--I named him Cameron because that's who he was. And yes, my characters generally show up with names and faces and that's it. (Think Anton Cheval--I KNEW that man from the get go!) But, Cam is a professional photographer, and I never thought about the confusion between his name and his job--Cam, camera. You get my drift--and my editor's! So, he is now Jake, which works, but it didn't right away because HE WAS CAM!! After a couple of weeks of thinking of him as Jake, I got over my snit and confusion, and we were able to move forward...

One thing I do need to address is the fact that I don't have the next Spirit Wild book done. I'm really sorry--my plan was to get it written in January and have it ready to go by this week, but I spent all that time working on INTIMATE, and in the meantime, my St. Martin's Press editor asked me if I could write a three book series about werewolves. Very sexy werewolves. Now, my Chanku are NOT werewolves, they're shapeshifters, and I've never written a werewolf story before so it really sounded like fun. Especially when she said they'd really like menage stories--now think about it. What woman in her right mind is going to turn down a chance to write a fantasy of two sexy guys seeing to her every womanly whim and wish?

Not me, that's for sure. Needless to say, I said yes, and I'm now working on creating the world for my wolves and the women who love them. I really think this will be a lot of fun. We're still trying to come up with titles, but I have the setting. I think I'm going back to the Trinity Alps in northern California where my pack will have a couple of businesses--a bar called Growl, and a high end resort called Feral Passions where women can come to have every fantasy fulfilled. What they don't realize is that it's also a perfect place for members of the pack to find mates. My brain is spinning with ideas! Very. Sexy. Ideas...

I spent part of this afternoon filling out an interview for a woman in Australia, answered all the questions and saved it, only it wasn't where I thought it went. Obviously, that means I need to go back and redo the entire thing. One of these days I'll possibly get my act together. I think it saved in my Outlook Temporary files, but since I'm on a Mac, I have no idea how to find those files! I even downloaded an app called "Easy Find," but obviously this wasn't easy enough. Still lost.

Since I don't have a new book coming out, I"m giving away some of my older ones. I have five trade sized print copies of Dark Moon, the third story in my Spirit Wild series for this month's contest.

This one is Igmutaka's story, and he's always been a favorite character of mine from the series. If you haven't had a chance to read it, I know you'll enjoy it.

Just send an entry using the form on this page--if you're on a mobile phone, it's probably at the very bottom of the page.--on a computer it should be to the right, and it says CONTEST ENTRY. DO NOT add your information in the comment section--that's public and anyone can see it, and I don't always get to them quickly to delete them in a timely fashion.
Picture
I haven't got any book recommendations for you guys this month--yes, I've been THAT busy that I haven't gotten to read anything worth talking about. I've got stories just sitting her taunting me--Paige Tyler's HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF, Patricia Brigg's NIGHT BROKEN, even Jayne Ann Krentz's TRUST NO ONE, all titles I've been dying to read and they're just waiting, staring at me. It is so not fair...

I'll be watching for your entries for DARK MOON. For those of you who already have the book, go ahead and enter and name another of my titles you don't have but would like. I still have a few of my older Wolf Tales and Sexy Beast copies. If you're chosen and it's a book I've got, I'll be more than happy to substitute, but you have to write the name down. If you don't give me a title, you'll go into the pool for DARK MOON.

On that note, I need to shut this sucker down and get some sleep. And one other thing before I close--for those of you who want to keep up with what I'm working on, I have a page on this site where I try and make short entries...it's like an online diary. Just go to my UPDATES & PROJECTS page.

I hope those of you living amid the frozen part of the country get some decent weather SOON! Will be thinking of you dealing with all the ice and snow, and sending warm thoughts your way. And if you're stuck at home, snowed in, I really hope you have something good to read!

Take care and be safe!

I see you have been busy and that's OK...we can all wait for perfection to come out... Your books give me life....lol... I love them. So exciting about the new werewolf books and I agree with you "Igmutaka story was my favorite as well" don't forget to take some time for yourself and read a good book 😄😄😄😄

Thank you, Kesha! I've been reading, but the books are ones I'm judging for a contest, not the ones I've purchased. Not to say they're not wonderful, because they really are! But I had purchased the ones I mentioned and hoped to have time for them before now. SOON!!!

I already have all your books so there's no need to enter the giveaway! Love each and every one of your stories! Can't wait for the werewolf books but will wait patiently! You sound super duper busy! Please don't over do it! Take care of yourself so your brilliance will continue to shine!

Uh...brilliance is not ever a word I associate with me. Really...more like "warped," or maybe "Type A," because I really am that way about my books. Definitely neurotic. My husband is a patient man. Mostly... ;-)

Oh, I can't wait to read this new series! I know where you can find a group of ladies more than happy to be beta readers! Hint, hint! ;)

LOL...Lisa, I think I'd much rather party with your group! But thank you--you never know. :-)

Kate Douglas

I accidentally deleted a comment (I have jerky hands...sometimes they go where I don't want them on the keyboard!) but I'm reposting it here:

Tanya Brown has just posted a comment on your blog post, February 2015 Newsletter:

I have all your WOLF TALES and SPIRIT WILD series. I would love to get the SEXY BEASTS, I only have VII and VIII.

And my answer is, "Thank you, Tanya. I actually have some of the older Sexy Beast books--not too many--but they're up for grabs. And for those of you who haven't read the Chanku stories in the anthologies, they are available as single title novella downloads from Amazon.com and other digital book retailers. They're $2.51 at Amazon."

Sara
2/20/2015 01:46:30 am

I'm not very good at being patient waiting for books to come (that's why I like my kindle its quick and easy to get a new book) but I can always re-read one of your older books while I'm waiting. But don't forget to take time for yourself as well. Your health is really important to all your readers it means you can keep writing ;-} .seriously though take time to sit and read and relax even if it's just for half an hour.

Kate Douglas
2/20/2015 04:34:56 am

Thanks, Sara. I'm really conscious of taking time to exercise, which is so important to people like me who sit way too much writing. I try and go at least two to four miles a day, running and walking, and that's the best thing I can do to relax. I plug in my headset and I'm out there grooving to the Beach Boys and Rod Stewart. What cracks me up is that when my husband and I were dating, one of my favorite songs was Maggie May--never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I'd be a 65 year old grandmother of six, out jogging to Maggie May...

2/20/2015 02:29:47 am

Kate, I love reading your books. I have all sexy beasts and wolf tales and all three of demonfire series, now i just need to know what should I get next? The weather here sucks with supposed to have snow and ice today and more ice tonight and tomorrow, so stay warm i know I'm gonna try. :)

Kate Douglas
2/20/2015 04:41:56 am

Thanks Tracie--but you know there are four DemonFire books, right? As well as a novella in the NOCTURNAL anthology. The books are, in order, DemonFire, HellFire, StarFire and CrystalFire. Nocturnal fits in between HellFire and StarFire. And have you read the Dream Catchers series? Erotic SF from Kensington's Aphrodisia line: Dream Catcher in the NightShift anthology, then Dream Bound and Dream Unchained. They're all available as ebooks, and you will still get the "whole story" if you skip the anthology. Then, of course, there's the StarQuest series from Ellora's Cave...Lionheart, Night of the Cat, Pride of Imar, Synergy, Bold Journey, and Best Friends Forever. I think all my books at EC are .99 cents now.

Kesha link
2/20/2015 07:47:11 pm

I absolutely fell in love with the Starquest series...

Kate Douglas
2/21/2015 07:38:46 am

Thanks, Kesha--those were my very first erotic stories, though definitely science fiction, not paranormal! I'm so glad you liked them. I still think they're some of my best stuff, even though I was such a newbie at the time.

It's definitely been crazy here, but yes, the summer will come, though we're still waiting for winter here. I'm afraid we'll get late frosts (which have been known to happen) and my flowers will all be gone! (and yes, I'm a really good worrier. If I don't have something to worry about, I'll find something...)

Tracy Nickels link
2/20/2015 04:37:40 am

Oh please, may I have one? I don't have anything new to read. Richard was in the hospital with Congestive Heart Failure, and a ulcer. His diet is changed, taking meds. Doesn't like it one bit!

Kate Douglas

I'm sorry, Tracy! Hope he's doing better!!! Did you enter?

Teresa Lloyd
2/20/2015 05:37:13 am

I am very much looking forward to the next book in Spirit Wild, however I am also looking forward to your new werewolf series!!! Kate I am sorry that I have not kept in touch. My family and I have had a really rough past few months. No sure if you heard, but we lost mom last Oct. 9th, and then dad on Nov 10th so needless to say it has been a sad time for us! However we did have some really great news at the end of Jan. My younger son BJ ask his girlfriend to marry him and she said yes lol.... She is a wonderful young woman and will be a great addition to our family. They have set a date of Oct. 17, 2015 Oh and I will be moving to Georgia as soon as my son and his wife find a house in Sept. Yes I know we have a lot going on, however I do think it is something that I need to keep from think about mom and dad not being here. I did not enter your contest, because I have this book and I would not want to take the chance for someone that does not away from them.
You were talking about your weather there, what is your winters normally like? Right now we are dipping down to -9 at night and 14 today was our high. I am staying inside lol..... I will keep you all in my prayers that the end of your is soon!!
Hope all is great with you and your family! If you get a chance I would love to hear from you, however I do understand that you are very busy. Take care Kate!
Happy reading and writing *
Teresa

Teresa, I'm so sorry for your loss--both parents so close, but I hope that means they're still together. But the exciting news about your son and his wife-to-be is wonderful, and thank you for the pictures! I'm thrilled for you--our daughter-in-law is so special to us, and I hope the same for you.

Definitely busy, but never too busy to keep up with old friends. Thanks for the update.

2/20/2015 05:57:36 am

I would love Ig's story. I haven't gotten that far. Or if you have any of the Wolf Tales books. My dad ran across one and started to read some and mind you... He's 87 and called it trash. :( from a totally different generation that wouldn't Dare discuss such things. LOL shocked him for sure.

Kate Douglas
2/20/2015 11:12:13 am

I understand--my 90 year old mother wouldn't let me tell any of her friends who I was, but a number of women in her seniors housing area approached me and said they loved my books. I never said a word to her... (she died in 2011). Either you like the hot stuff or you don't, and I don't always think it's the age or era. It's the mind--open or closed, ya know? :-)

Carol
2/21/2015 01:36:27 pm

I really agree...either you like them or do not. Which is the way of life, right..?

I do not know what my boys are going to do with my books when I die...lol...yes, I was talking about this with them. They do not want to think about their Momma reading sexy books or think of their Momma and sex(y) anything..lol.

Most of my books are signed by the author(s) and they have included my name on them...so it would be hard to give them to the library or sell them on e-bay (or where ever) because my name is there -- unless the buyer was another Carol, of course.

I think one of my nieces wants my library, but I am not sure. I told her that she would either have to move or build on to her house for my books -- yes, I have that many...lol. My boys tell me that I am a book hog that it does not matter what type of book it is I grab and run...lol. Which is true. I have a room (library/office) that is a 20 X 20 that is full of books (yes, they are all on bookshelves) but my desk does not fit due to the bookshelves. I have to build the shelves and make it look like a public library. Tons of books. It took me 4 days to pack them when I relocated back here. My boys told me I was crazy for having that many. LOL

We had a huge birthday party for my Granddaughter who turned 6 on 2/19. She actually got herself a desktop computer from her Nana (me) and her Daddy. Here I am a "hacker" and she knows a bit more than I do about computers...lol. I have to either build her a desk or go find a special one for her. I think I will build it -- a miniature one like mine made out of cherry wood. She loves my desk.

Headed for bed now, you have a great night....

Kate Douglas
2/21/2015 02:54:14 pm

That's the one thing I think I have in common with all my readers--a love of books. I don't think we can ever have too many, ya know? :-) Send me a picture of the desk if you build one for your granddaughter. I used to love to build furniture and refinish old stuff. Just don't have time anymore.

Carol
3/1/2015 05:17:11 am

I will send you a photo of the desk when I get it finished. Because of my hands, I am sure it will take me a while.

I need to send you a picture of her quilt that I made....;)

Kate Douglas
3/1/2015 01:49:19 pm

I'd love to see both the quilt and the desk! Thanks. And I hear ya on the hands--I've got arthritis, and the weird thing is, typing keeps my hands limber so it isn't as painful, but when I'm not writing, my fingers really freeze up.

I love the picture you posted. It brings a feeling of spring despite the cold and since I don't have a heater at the moment it's just what I needed.

Kate Douglas
2/20/2015 11:14:27 am

Ouch on no heater! Yuck! Interesting though, how they always quit when you REALLY need one! But I'm glad you liked my photo--even the azaleas are blooming, and the yard is just beginning to burst. Stay warm!!!

Rita de Canha
2/20/2015 12:43:42 pm

On this side of the world we are currently going through a heat wave :) can not imagine the cold there as we do not get snow here but must be perfect to be snugged under a blanket and reading one of Kate's books on a cold winters day! Love your books Kate, can't thank you enough!!!

Kate Douglas
2/20/2015 01:53:50 pm

Hi Rita, and thank you! It's actually warm where we live--northern California is in the fourth year of drought, and we've hardly had a winter on this side of the US! It's been weird!!! Cold weather actually sounds pretty good here!

Caffey
2/20/2015 07:55:50 pm

Not long ago I was reading a historical and the hero's name was Adam and I had my next read lined up and started reading and now this book hero's name is Adam! It didn't matter that I finished the other book and this one was a different genre, Paranormal, I couldn't concentrate on this book because I kept thinking of the hero in the historical! I gave up and tried a few times later but it took me about 3 months til I could read it. Your story on Cam or Jake reminded me of this.

The flowers were a joy to see. It brought some joy here on these ongoing cold days and reminds me to look to spring! Always, Cathie

Kate Douglas
2/21/2015 07:33:15 am

Cathie, that's exactly what happened to me--I wrote the hero and his name was Cameron, but he went by Cam. I KNEW him as Cam, and then I had to change him to Jake and it took me forever to feel as if I still knew him. It's like you bond to a particular character along with his name, and then all of a sudden the name changes, and that changes the character as well. At least he's still REALLY sexy...

Spring will come. I hope you don't have to wait too long for it!

Stay warm, m'dear!!

One of my favorite things to do this time of year is to drive some place quiet and sit in the car, listening to the sound of rain on the roof while reading. But we only have a 10% chance of rain near Sacramento :( though I keep hoping for more.

While your new series sounds interesting and I look forward to reading it, I hope you'll have time to read for pleasure soon; I've already read Trust No One and Night Broken twice each :)

Kate Douglas
2/21/2015 07:36:27 am

I'm SO jealous! LOL...I've got 1 1/2 books to read for the contest and I've been so lucky with the ones sent to me, because they've been good, but I'm freaking out having to wait to read the ones I've bought. I am such a fan of Jayne's writing, and I started reading Patricia Briggs because a reader kept telling me I had to, and she was right. I love her stories!!!

As far as rain, there's talk of possible rain by February 28, and hopefully it will make it across the valley to you guys. The whole state is too damned dry.

Carol
2/21/2015 01:14:45 pm

Hi, Ms. Kate and all:

We finally got some snow....about 36 inches, which is not very bad except under the snow is solid ice because it rained before it snowed.

We are getting rained on now...it is a chilly hard rain. My Momma said rain can be like people -- A very hard cold angry rain is more like men, where as, a soft warm easy rain is more like women. Now I am not sure about this because I know some people are the opposite of this. But my Momma was a sweet lady who always looked for the best in everyone even dug it out of some who were refusing to be kind...lol

The temperature here is 7 degrees (F) and the local weather man said that we might be getting more snow. I love the winter time....all white (though I do not like to wear white unless it is "under" clothes).

As I have said before I am a re-reader of all the books I have collected over the years; I have not had a new book since October so I am dying to hit up the local book stores to take a look see. No one likes to take me anymore they say I take too long shopping for books...lol

Thank you for the opportunity to be in the contest and possibly my name will pop up!

Good Luck to everyone

;)

HUGS

I too have all your books, and just want to say that if your Werewolf series is anything close to Sexy Beast and Chanku, WOW cant wait!! Thanks Kate for your brilliant books

Kate Douglas
2/24/2015 02:33:40 pm

Deb, I'm actually working on the synopsis this evening to run it by my editor. I'm anxious to get started, as I've already got a feel for the characters.

And thank you for your kind words...there are days when I feel about as "brilliant" as a block of concrete...I do appreciate the fact you guys are all so forgiving!

One can only hope. I'm in the "world building" process right now, that discovery of the rules for the world I set my story in, and that's always a lot of fun. Thanks for the vote of confidence! (I need that, believe me!)

Thanks, Sharon! I've started work on the first werewolf story--at this point, the title is FERAL PASSIONS, though that could get changed.I'm having fun with it, which is always a good sign. :-)
