April 2015 Newsletter

4/25/2015

I was beginning to wonder if I'd have time to get a newsletter done this month--I finished edits on FERAL PASSIONS, the first in my sexy werewolf ménage stories, and went straight to work on the edits for REDEMPTION, the second book in my romantic suspense series. Almost done with that set, and then I need to write the final story in the RS series. We're still tossing around a title for that one, but I think once I have a better idea what it's going to be about, a title will come to me. I hope...

As soon as that one is done, I am finally going to get to write the next Spirit Wild book. Please don't give up on me. I miss my Chanku something fierce, and can't wait to get back into their world!

Oh, guess I should explain the photo at the top--that's a diamondback rattlesnake, and the photo is courtesy of my older brother Dave, who lives up in Oregon. He's "almost" retired and his wife is retired, and they are constantly taking wonderful trips and sending me pictures, which I really love but which also make me insanely jealous, because I haven't gone anywhere in forever! But I think that, of all the critter shots he's sent me over the years, this is my favorite. There's something so incongruous about a deadly python resting amid the wildflowers. Anyway, just wanted to share, and no, it has nothing to do with anything I'm writing.

I did get the cover for FERAL PASSIONS--the book comes out in September in a duet--a dual release with author AC Arthur titled CLAIMED BY THE MATE. It releases first as an ebook, and then will come out in print in an anthology with an added story by author Eve Langlais.

Heroes and Heartbreakers just did a cover reveal a couple of days ago--I really like this one, and I'm looking forward to its release. I'll get an excerpt up as soon as I get a release from my editor.

HOT ALPHAS, the anthology with Lora Leigh, Shiloh Walker, Laurelin McGee, and me, will be out on May 19. The story I've got in it is TANGLED, a sexy romantic suspense set here in the wine country where I live. We lived in Dry Creek Valley
Picture
where my imaginary winery is set, and I really hope you'll like the story. Funny thing happened with that one--when I start a book, I go into Google images and find a photo of a man, generally a celebrity I don't know because I don't watch TV or see many movies, but it's an image close to the character I've pictured as my hero for the story. I do the same for the heroine, and those photos help me keep the continuity of my character throughout....well, that and a detailed biography I make of each person. Anyway, I had the perfect Nate Dunagan and it wasn't until the story was finished that I discovered Nate was Bradley Cooper.
Picture
Nate's the vineyard manager who comes to take charge of the Intimate Winery, but he'll have to work with the winemaker, who has always known it as Tangled Vines, the winery her mother and father started. Her father's advancing dementia from Alzheimer's led to the loss of the land and the home he'd built for her now deceased mother, so it's a pretty tough pill to swallow when the new guy shows
up. You can read a first chapter on the HOT ALPHAS page. The rest of the series is set either in San Francisco or at the vineyard, and it was such fun doing the research for this one. I actually spent time poking around a wine cave like the one in my story, though the only thing both of them have in common is that they're caves. The one for Bella Winery is MUCH nicer than the old cave Tangled Vines aka Intimate Vineyards has!

Other upcoming releases now on the schedule are INTIMATE in mass market paperback on December 1, 2015, and the second book, REDEMPTION, on December 29, 2015--two books in December, and three if you count the mass market release of HOT ALPHAS, which comes out in trade paperback (the bigger size books) the same day as INTIMATE releases. What's cool is that if you haven't had a chance to read TANGLED, it will be on the shelves, hopefully next to INTIMATE, at the same time.

I have read hardly anything this past month other than books I was judging for a contest and can't discuss (though they were really good! I can tell you later...) but did get a chance to read Patricia Briggs NIGHT BROKEN. I love the Mercy Thompson series, and never would have read them if not for the persistent recommendations of so many of you. Thank you! Also read the new Rock Kiss book from Nalini Singh--ROCK HARD. I love this series!

Sitting here, taunting me are six books I'm dying to read--I keep them right where I can see them, as incentive to get my work done!
I'm planning to dig into Amanda Quick aka Jayne Ann Krentz's GARDEN OF LIES first--her books are consistently wonderful, and always get me back on track. Next will be JR Ward's THE SHADOWS, because it's been sitting here for what feels like forever, and I miss the boys in the BDB! I want to read all four of the others as well, but they couldn't be more different from one another, so I imagine a lot will depend on what mood I'm in. Every single one sounds terrific!

Not much else new going on. My life has revolved around writing and trying to stick with my exercise. I've been running 1-4 miles a day, though cut back this week because of the bursitis in my hip. Getting old is definitely not for sissies! I bought some new running shoes that seem to be taking the strain off my joints--I think the other pair had lost all its cushioning, but I've dropped ten pounds and am pretty much just trying to maintain where I am. It's SO easy to gain it back, and so darned hard to lose it!

I'm giving away three print copies of HOW TO WRITE HOT SEX, edited by Shoshanna Evers and including a dozen articles from twelve of us who write the hot stuff. There really are some terrific tips in here, and I think you'll enjoy it. It's fun just to read, as well, and you'll recognize a lot of the names. Click on the title if you want to read about it--the link will take you to Amazon.com.

My best to all of you. The contest will end next Saturday. Please DO NOT put your personal information in the comments section. Use the contest entry form--it's at the right on your computer screen, and all the way at the bottom of the page PAST the comments section, if you're using a mobile phone and some tablets.

If you live in a part of the country that's getting crappy weather, my thoughts are with you. Some of you have had a winter that shows no intention of leaving, while we've never had winter out here! I was wearing spring and summer clothes throughout the year--just weird.

Also, my apologies if any of you received spam messages from me Thursday or Friday. My Yahoo account which I only use to make announcements for the newsletter, got hacked. I've fixed it, but what a pain in the butt!

Enough. I'm headed to bed

Be safe, take care, and get your entries in early.

My best to all of you,

Kate

Thanks Cathie--I appreciate the concern! I took today off. Just back from taking two of the grandsons out to the field where Bompa (that's my spouse) flies radio control airplanes. Today was a day to shoot at planes with a paintball gun, and they had a blast. Then we went to Carl's Jr. where I totally destroyed three months of diet, but it was worth it. Nothing better than a hamburger and french fries!

I lived out in Oregon for 9 years, luckily we never saw any of the local poisonous reptile residents in our yard. Waited patiently for your newsletter, thank you and take care.

Oregon definitely has rattlesnakes. We have them here as well--any time you hike out of town, you need to watch for the critters. I love snakes--even rattlesnakes, as long as I see them before they see me! I was so busy working on my revisions I didn't get to the newsletter until last night. I appreciate your patience!

I've seen lot of rattlesnakes here in Washington. That one looks not happy. Probably startled it. Hope both parties parted company peacefully. They try to stay out of your way, You hear it's warning rattle. Freeze don't move. it will get away from you, it is more afraid of you. Always wear thick boots that cover your foot up high over the ankle. You don't bother them they won't you. Wow I'm making sure I have those new ones on my wish list it on Amazon. Yay you on the weight loss, I went from 230-177. I bounce around 177- to 180. Being on a salt free diet with Richard has helped too. We walk every where we have to go.

Wow, Tracy--that's a commendable weight loss! Good for you. Walking and exercise is important. I need to watch the salt better than I do, though I have really low blood pressure so haven't worried too much. I blew it today, though. Haven't been to Carl's Jr. in a LONG time!

HI KATE, I LEAVE FOR JAMAICA SOON!

Kate Douglas

Wow, Linda! How cool is that? Have a wonderful time!!! How long will you be there? I've never been.

I entered, even though I don't write, it would be fun to read how you write these scenes.

Kate Douglas
4/27/2015 04:41:33 am

LOL...it'll take away the mystery! It's actually an interesting process, and different for every single one of us. I tend to use a really deep point of view where I become the character when I'm writing. When I've done scenes where the woman is threatened or victimized, my heart rate actually goes up while I'm writing and the "fight or flight" instinct can kick in. Writing can be a very emotional, personal event. It's often exhausting, too, not from the typing or thinking, but from the emotional draw on the psyche.

Cheryl Lemon

I bet it is. Just reading it can be very emotional.

Hi Kate, Thank God Indiana has no poisinous (that I know of) snakes ! You know that I would be the one to walk on one. Although I did have a dog who was half wolf that loved to bring snakes home to play with. Later, Sue

We have a garter snake that lives in our tiny backyard. Long and black with yellow stripes running lengthwise. It's really beautiful, but the other night I was out there in my bare feet, taking Rufus out to piddle, and the snake almost went over the top of my foot. I didn't scream, but I certainly jumped! I love snakes, but don't like them sneaking up on me in the dark...

I know how you feel about BDB. I love the series and the Shadows has made as the second best book I have ever read. Like you, JR Ward can pull a person into a world and never let them go. Can't wait for the next one from both you and her.

Kate Douglas
4/28/2015 01:01:41 am

I really can't even think of starting the blasted book because I know I'll ignore all my work if I do! JR Ward's stories totally suck me in, though I have to admit, I'm like that with just about any well-done book. I'm waiting for the day when I have enough free time to sit down with the first one and read all the way through. I did that last year with Joey Hill's Vampire Queen series and it was wonderful!

Cheryl
5/1/2015 02:44:57 am

May I say 1 or 2 things about Shadow by J.R. Ward.
1. Definitly make sure you can sit down and read from cover to cover because you WILL not want to sit down, (I have read and it is awesome and did not put down till I hit the last page) and
2, Have a hanky ready around chapter 68.
and now that I have totally got you all reved up to read Shadows a quick hi and miss you cannot wait for your next books

Kate Douglas
5/1/2015 03:33:58 am

Well, crap! I can't start it for at least a couple of weeks. I'm judging a contest and still have books to read, and another to write. You are SUCH a tease. And I generally have a box of tissues handy whenever I'm reading something deeply emotional. I am SUCH a weepy wuss!

I'm a romance author--I really love those happy endings, though I don't mind putting my characters through pure, unadulterated hell before they get there...

Contests are back! I'm not totally settled, but really miss giving things away, so ready or not, I'm going to start slow. International entries are welcome, though I will have to limit International winners to ebooks. Postage costs are just too high. Your addresses will not be shared or sold--I respect your privacy. I will only collect addresses if I am giving away print books. I won't be doing that as much because I've got very few print books left in my stash, but I do have other things!
