We got up early Saturday and packed up the rig. After coffee with friends, we headed north with plans to
take Highway 138 along the scenic Umpqua River. We were already committed to the route when we discovered
the highway was closed due to a forest fire. That meant a change in plans, so we went east, through Crater Lake
and then north again to Highway 58 and a drive through the Willamette National Forest. We stayed over at a
gorgeous campsite on Lake Odell and then went almost all the way to Eugene before heading south to visit with
Doug's brother and sister-in-law near Oakland, Oregon. (Just three days later, Highway 58 was closed due to a
forest fire! No wonder the air is so smoky)

While I was having coffee with friends, Doug and Rufus went
to the Mt. Shasta fish hatchery.
Never quite sure how much fun Rufus is actually having!

Met with friends (and authors) Patti Berg and Libby Hall for coffee and some neat info about the Mt. Shasta area.
I've never seen Crater Lake before, and can't say I've seen it yet. The smoke was so bad you could hardly see across the crater.
Fires visible from the road around the rim.
We didn't even stop at the lookouts...it was depressing!
We got out at this one to see the island...and more smoke.
At Lake Odell, my husband decided to go swimming...not me!
Rufus and I both decided he was nuts--the water was cold!
It was a very QUICK swim!
Definitely a beautiful campsite.
Nothing like a good book by a quiet lake!
I was reading Robyn Carr's DEEP IN THE VALLEY, and I
am so sorry I already finished all three of the books!!! I guess
I'll have to read them again...
