We didn't plan to come home until Saturday, but as we were headed toward Drakesbad in the Mt. Lassen National Forest,
we realized that once we got there, we wouldn't have Internet, cell phone, radio or TV reception, and we didn't want to
miss the first debate between Obama and McCain--so, political junkies that we are, we drove over 400 miles home, caught
part of it on the radio and watched the rest on the television.
It was an absolutely amazing trip--both of us got to see country we've never seen before, and we realized we need to go
back and take it slower next time. I want more hikes, more days enjoying the scenery and more days to just appreciate
the beautiful country we live in. Now, though, I've got a ton of emails to catch up on, a novella that's due in about a
month and a new grandson to go buy a birthday present for! I really enjoyed meeting readers at Powell's Books in Portland
and I'm still hoping somone will send me copies of photos so I can post them.
Here are some of the things we saw today...
Rufus was all ready to go this morning--I think he'd had enough of this traveling stuff!
We watched cowboys working cattle across the river from our campsite last night...
The colors around alkalai lakes are gorgeous--whites, blues, golds...really amazing to look at.
Loved the way we looked down on this railroad snaking across the valley below--this was the same route my husband's grandfather travelled when he drove his freight wagon in 1913.
Mt. Shasta from the southeast--it's such a beautiful volcano!
This entire mountain in Modoc Co. was red...really eye-catching.
Not that far away, we passed one that was snow white.
And then it was back to sprinklers on fields and the sun going down...but what a great trip!
