We woke up to a dusting of fresh snow on the mountain peaks and rain showers the first half of the day. Got into
sleet and fresh snow going over Lost Trail Pass, but it turned to rain as we lost elevation. We've been without cell
or Internet service most of the day, except for a very short window while traveling through a small town in Idaho,
when my cell phone rang. It was our son, calling to tell us that his son, Owen, had been born an hour earlier!
Grandson Luca has a birthday September 21, Owen on September 22, and Luca's baby brother Cole on September
23--September is a great month for birthdays in this family...and Owen makes grandchild number 5 for us.
Unfortunately, where we're camped tonight, there is no cell service, so I can't get on the phone and call everyone
I know to tell them there's a new baby! I may need to be committed by morning...it's driving me absolutely nuts.
We're at a gorgeous campsite in the Yankee Fork Historical Mining District, about ten miles east of Stanley, Idaho
in the Salmon Mountains. The aspen are changing color and we're the only ones in the campground. It's quiet,
the clouds are blowing in and out, and I'm getting ready to cook dinner. The drive today was breathtaking, with the
most amazing geological formations. Every turn in the road was another "ahhhhh" moment!

Saw horses running and wondered why...
|
Then passed this old fellow with his string of horses and one baby mule walking down the highway! I would love to know
his story.
|
|
The Salmon River canyon is amazing.
|
Saw lots of old log structures--probably mines--and houses built into the hillsides.
|
|
Fascinating changes in the rock along the way.
|
Some of these old cabins were amazing--and still standing!
|
Our campsite tonight...and it's COLD outside!
