Hawaii 2007
Start at the bottom of the page and work up!

Today was our first real day at the beach. It was gorgeous out and we had a ball!

The guys took the kayaks out to a nearby island.
I went snorkling, and it was so cool...Ella kept busy in the sand.

Jon, Mel and Ella
Doug was on the phone with Sarah.
We went to a fascinating old temple, which is now just a pile of stones, but I swear I could feel something there!
This was the place I needed to find...there was such a sense of history about it!
These great big leaves hide a multitude of sins!
Dinner out at Lucy's in Kailua. Ella was SO not impressed!
Of course, she was eating strained stuff, not the real thing!
More Friday shots...
Doug and Jon visited Pearl Harbor and took a tour of the USS Missouri, then went downtown to Waikiki to see the project Jon is working on,
the new Watermark "planned residential tower."

Doug does NOT like heights...and Jon calmly informed him he'd have to climb DOWN the ladder you see to get to the next floor. He was not a happy camper!
In fact, I'm surprised he got close enough to the edge to get pictures of Jon looking out...and down. WAY down! (they were on the 32nd floor of a partially completed building.)

Melanie, Ella and I spent a couple of hours shopping in Waikiki after lunch at the Sheraton. Definitely a "girls' afternoon!"

Some of the local critters in and around the cottage...we have geckos EVERYWHERE inside, and they make a loud noise between the
chirp of a bird and bark of a dog...which definitely gets your attention in the middle of the night! The ones inside are mostly little brown
"house geckos," but they move too fast to get a decent photo!
This little guy, a "gold dust day gecko," was in the kitchen and jumped out of a bag when Doug reached for it...while my husband was getting his heart rate back under control, I caught the critter and moved him outside. He is bright green with what looks like gold dust scattered across his back--absolutely gorgeous!
Thought about having this for breakfast...not! This guy would have made a meal for two--they grow snails BIG in Hawaii--the shell is about three inches long.

Doug and I babysat Ella this morning while Melanie went into the office for awhile. After Doug got a short bike ride in, he got his camera out...which means today's
pictures of Dabba and Bompa's trip to Hawaii are all of Ella!
(You'll notice she has excellent taste in handbags--Ella was fascinated by my Sven bag from Tutu Carol's purse shop!)
Later in the evening, Doug dropped me off at the Borders Express in the Windward Mall where I met up with Kellie Chang. Kellie is the store's
Romance Expert, and she is absolutely amazing. She'd arranged for a few of us to get together and meet for munchies at the local IHOP. I hated to leave, but Mel had
a fantastic dinner planned...and you know me and food!
L-R: Kellie Chang, Borders Express Romance Expert, Kate, Amelia (Aunty Peaches) Kelly (Who also does GORGEOUS cover art for Loose Id!) Judy and Ann.
Doug picked me up around seven and we went back to Mel and Jon's for a delicious dinner...after Ella went to bed.

We started out the day meeting Melanie and Ella at the Bishop Museum. It's a gorgeous museum but much of it is undergoing renovation
right now, so we couldn't go into a lot of the areas. However, what we saw was pretty spectacular!

These tall standards are made of bamboo and feathers....
...they're absolutely amazing!
View of downtown Honolulu from the Bishop Museum.
Photography doesn't do it justice, but there was a section for kids with black light and cool painted creatures of the deep. Ella loved it!
Our next stop was the beautiful botanical gardens of Waimea Falls. This red-headed cardinal isn't native to Hawaii, but it's still gorgeous!
We were here about a year and a half ago, and it was much greener and more lush. Hawaii has been very dry this past year, and it shows, but it's still a beautiful hike.
The plant life here is amazing. There are various areas set up with plants from all over the tropics--flowers can be breathtaking. The ginger was not in full bloom yet, but Doug managed to find plenty of neat stuff to get pictures of!
Our last stop before heading back was at Sunset Beach where we stuck our toes in the water and watched the surfers. It was absolutely gorgeous!

We arrived in Oahu around noon, Hawaii time. Had a wonderful flight aboard Hawaiian Airlines, got our rental car and headed for Kaneohe.
Flying into Oahu--just above that bay in the center of the photo is the Marriott, one of the projects Jon has worked on.
This is the cottage where we're staying--it's really cute, definitely funky but quite comfortable...once you get used to the "barking" of the geckos! Those little suckers are LOUD!
Inside the cottaage. High ceilings and an open floor plan.
Looking out the back window toward the bay--and Doug with the newspaper.
The most important reason to come to Hawaii! Ella has grown SO much! 15 months old now.
This is the view of the bay--it's not this visible from the cottage, but once you walk around the screen of palm trees that provides a nice sense of privacy, there it is...and Ella finally decided she'd had enough of wandering around.
